The Maryland House and Senate session ends on April 13th. Sometime between then and now, the Gender Anti-Discrimination Bill (House Bill 474 and Senate Bill 566) will be voted on. There's no exact date as to when the bill will be voted on, so time is S-H-O-R-T.
A bunch of Team Trans members met for an emergency meeting last night, and we have a few ideas for what to do with such short notice.
1) Even though public access has been removed from the bill, it is STILL important that it passes as it (it covers employment and housing). Please write your legislators and urge them to pass the bill. Also, you can add in a personal message about how important public access is as a basic civil right. Equality Maryland has a link here to write in support of the bill.
2) We will have phone and letter scripts ready in a few days to aid everyone. Take the phone scripts, form letters, and internet links like the one above and send them to EVERYONE you know who supports the trans community - friends, family, related interest groups like PFLAG, HAVEN, GayStraightAlliances and Queer Student Unions at colleges, etc. Let's show them that our voice WILL be heard!
3) Remember, there needs to be a positive attitude. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so let's show them our strength and numbers in a positive light!
The blog will have more activity coming up, and will continue to be updated regularly with action items, news and updates, a photo blog and submissions from other Team Trans members (and you - send stuff in!). When we know something, you'll know it too. :)
We really appreciate your support and love. THANK YOU!!!!
